SMEAR

The place of interest is the area surrounding La Matriz Church in the port sector of Valparaiso Harbor, Chile.

The Church is flanked on the one hand by the Santa Ana Elementary School and by the Charity Canteen 421, on the other. The feeding station is dependent on the church and acts as a place of shelter and lodging for homeless people.

In the site, two opposing situations can be clearly identified. On the one hand, in the area adjacent to the Charity Canteen 421, the lodging belonging to the Catholic Church, there are scenes of violence involving prostitutes, drug addicts, drunkards and drug dealers. Immediately opposite, students access the Santa Ana Elementary School, which acts as a training and instruction center for children in the area.

There are basically two central themes here: the violence developed in this area (which acts as the scenario) and the schoolchildren (who are the spectators to these scenes).

The intention is to identify the crime or social decomposition spots (places), in a way similar to that of the identification of necrotic tissue in a body that has been ravished.
